So now that we've got that covered, here are 3 very easy, one ingredient skin boosters you can make with SIMPLE ingredients.
All of these toners are high in antioxidants which help protect skin from things like UV and skin cell damage. These toners are also anti-inflammatory (see previous post on 5 Essential Oils To Fight Wrinkles to learn more about what anti-inflammatory means!) so they can help calm irritation and even reduce puffiness under eyes.
Nutmeg has a wide variety of skin benefits and is widely recommended for it's anti-acne, antibacterial skin benefits that can also help get rid of blackheads. Nutmeg can also help prevent signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles, reduce excess oil, it can improve skin tone and complexion, plus it can brighten skin and lighten dark spots. So if you have hyper-pigmentation on the skin, scars, age spots, or discoloration that is darker than your skin tone, nutmeg can help lighten it back to your natural color.
Nutmeg also has a way of reducing the breakdown of fat tissue on the deeper layer or skin - and that's the fat layer that we want! These fat cells help fill in lines and wrinkles, and they keep skin bouncy and youthful. Nutmeg has shown to help keep that fat layer supple for softer, healthier skin.
Grate 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon of fresh nutmeg into about 4oz of boiling water. For powdered nutmeg, into 4oz of boiling water (to extract oils). Steep 20-30 minutes. Wipe on face and leave 5-10 minutes, rinse clean and follow with moisturizer
Ginger is very, very high in antioxidants that help protect and reverse damage to skin cells. Just like nutmeg can reduce spots, ginger can also spots, but in the OPPOSITE way! Ginger can reduce hypo-pigmentation - scars, spots, or discolorations that are lighter or whiter than your natural skin tone. It has stimulating properties to increase blood flow, helping keep skin healthy and even.
Steep an inch or two of raw, sliced like tea, mix 1/8 - 1/4 tsp ground ginger into 4oz boiling water. Steep 20-30 minutes. Wipe on face and leave 5-10 minutes, rinse clean and follow with moisturizer
GREEN TEA TONER
Green tea is known for having health benefits, but most importantly it is very high in antioxidants. These prevent oxidation and the breakdown of cells, which leads to things we don't want like cancer. In fact, green tea is believed to have a strong effect against cancer cells when taken internally AND when applied to the skin!
One of the polyphenols (antioxidants) in green tea that makes it special is called EGCG. It's being studied for a variety of things it may help with, but it has a pretty cool effect on skin. Our skin cells have a short lifespan of about a month, and about 2/3's of the way through their lifespan, they start to die. When applied to dying skin cells, ECGC actually showed to reactivate them! The old skin cells started dividing again to make new cells, and it even helps them differentiate faster. So, it basically encourages your skin to stay alive and keep making new skin cells. This may be helpful for all kinds of skin conditions outside of aging issues, like healing scars, psoriasis, rosacea, ulcers, wounds, and of course wrinkles. It can improve skin elasticity, fight acne-causing bacteria, and naturally draw impurities out of skin.
Green tea is also naturally astringent (read more about astringent), so it can help reduce the appearance of pores, plus tone and tighten skin. Green tea is great for reducing puffiness under eyes.
Steep green tea 5 minutes in 4 ounces of hot water, or cold steep overnight to extract tea. Wipe on face and leave 5-10 minutes, rinse clean and follow with moisturizer.
