Give the gift of pumpkin....or keep it for yourself... Pumpkin seeds have some pretty great benefits that make them an excellent source of nutrients for snacking, but a lot of these benefits also have a place in caring for skin. Aside from being high in minerals and antioxidants, pumpkin seeds have properties to help with inflammation and boost skin health with natural vitamins like Vitamin E. Pumpkin seeds are high in nutritious pumpkin seed oil which promotes bright, clear skin and helps condition, heal, and protect. It's easy to put that oil to work with your extra pumpkin guts. If you're working with raw seeds, as many people are this time of year, scoop them into a pot with water and boil for 15-30 minutes, until the seeds start to separate from the stringy pumpkin flesh. You may have to separate them a little with your fingers, but most of the pumpkin pulp should come off easily.
Allow seeds to dry fully, or bake at 300 degrees (F) for 15-20 minutes until slightly crisp. Cool pumpkin seeds completely, and process seeds in a coffee grinder for a fine scrub mix. You can stir in extra exfoliators like granulated sugar for sensitive skin, coffee grounds (PSL SCRUB!), or fine dead sea salt to help with body acne or eczema. Mix your dry ingredients (pumpkin seeds, etc.) with your favorite body oil for a simple, all-over scrub. Pumpkin seed oil is a great choice for this one, or you can try avocado, grape seed, or safflower oils. A wet:dry ratio of about 1:2 is a good starting point, and you can adjust to your desired consistency. Add a few spices to brighten your scrub scent - cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg are great for skin circulation, skin tone, and fighting acne! You can also add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to customize your scent. Homemade scrubs are a great, easy gift for colder weather and the holidays. This one should keep 1-2 months in a clean, airtight container. Make sure to avoid any contact with water, and keep your scrub in the fridge to preserve the best.
